Geofencing
Geofencing draws a virtual boundary around a place so a system can tell when a device enters or leaves it. In field service the boundary sits around a job site or a depot, and crossing it raises an event: an arrival alert, a departure alert, or a flag on a clock-in made outside the zone.
How geofencing works
Geofencing compares a device's reported position against a boundary you have drawn, and fires an event when the device crosses it. The boundary is usually a circle of a set radius around a point, or a shape drawn around a site.
Accuracy is set by the phone's location fix, not by the software. Dense buildings and underground spaces degrade it, so radii are usually drawn with some tolerance rather than tight to the fence line.
What geofencing is used for in field service
It is used for three things: knowing a technician has arrived without phoning them, knowing they have left before the job was marked complete, and checking that a clock-in was made where it was claimed.
Omni Field supports drawing geofence boundaries around any job site or service area, raises arrival, departure and breach alerts, and verifies clock-in against the approved site geofence so an entry made outside the zone is flagged. Timesheet entries carry the GPS coordinates.
Verified clock-in is not automatic clock-in
Verified clock-in means the technician still presses the button, and the system checks the position against the geofence and flags a mismatch. Automatic clock-in would mean crossing the boundary starts the clock with no action from the technician. These are different, and the difference matters for payroll disputes.
Omni Field does the first. Technicians clock in and out from the field app, each entry is verified against your approved geofences, and out of zone entries are flagged for review rather than silently accepted or silently rejected.
Privacy and consent
Location tracking of staff is personal information and needs to be handled accordingly. In South Africa that means POPIA obligations: tell people what is collected, why, and for how long, and collect it for a purpose you can defend.
Practically, keep tracking to working hours, tell your team in writing what is recorded, and be able to show them their own data. A tracking programme people understand causes far fewer problems than one they discover.
