Certificate of compliance (CoC)

A certificate of compliance is a document issued by a registered person confirming that an installation meets the applicable safety standard. In South Africa, electrical installations are certified under the Electrical Installation Regulations, and the wiring standard they are assessed against is SANS 10142-1. Gas and plumbing work carry their own certificates.

What a certificate of compliance covers

A certificate of compliance covers a defined installation at a defined address, assessed against a published standard on a given date. It is a statement about the condition of that installation at that point, not an open-ended guarantee about everything on the property.

For electrical work in South Africa, the assessment is made against SANS 10142-1, the wiring code for low voltage installations. The certificate is issued by a registered person, and the accompanying test report records what was inspected and measured.

Electrical, gas and plumbing certificates

The three common certificates in South African trades are separate documents issued by separate registered practitioners. An electrical certificate of compliance does not cover the gas installation, and a gas certificate does not cover the plumbing.

Requirements differ by trade, by municipality and over time, particularly around property transfer. Confirm the current requirement with the relevant authority or your trade body rather than relying on a general summary, including this one.

Keeping certificates and registrations in order

Two records need managing: the certificates you issue to customers, and the registrations and qualifications that entitle your people to issue them. The second is the one that quietly lapses.

Omni Field keeps a certification register for your team with issue and expiry dates and document uploads, sends expiry alerts at 90, 30 and 7 days, and can block assigning a technician whose required certification has expired to a job that needs it. Certificates issued to customers can be attached to the job and shared through the client portal.

Why it matters commercially

Compliance documentation is often what wins and keeps commercial work, because a managing agent or a facilities manager has to evidence it upward. A contractor who can produce a certificate and its test report on request is easier to keep than one who cannot find it.

It is also a liability question. Work certified by someone whose registration had lapsed is a problem you discover at the worst possible moment, which is the argument for tracking expiry dates rather than trusting memory.
